Literary Terms for Final Exam

| 1st person point of view | the narrator is a character in the story (I, me, we, our) |
| 3rd person limited point of view | the narrator of the story is an outside observer and only knows the thoughts and feelings of ONE character. |
| 3rd person omniscient point of view | the narrator is considered to be "all knowing" and can tell the reader what each character is thinking and feeling |
| abstract noun | names an idea, a feeling, a quality, or a characteristic that cannot be perceived by your five senses such as "freedom" or "bravery." |
| allegory | a symbolic story in which people, settings, or actions represent ideas or moral qualities; an extended metaphor |
| alliteration | the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words |
| allusion | a reference to a well-known person, place, event, literary work, or work of art |
| antagonist | the character who works against the protagonist in the story |
| chronological | arranged in order of time of occurrence |
| collective noun | names a group of people or things |
| common noun | names any person, place, thing, or idea (lowercase) |
| concrete noun | names a person, place, or thing that can be perceived by one or more of the senses |
| dramatic irony | when the audience knows something that the characters in the drama do not |
| epic | a long narrative poem telling of a hero's deeds |
| epithet | a word or phrase that characterizes a person or thing that adds to or replaces a name, for example, "Grey-eyed Athena." |
| external conflict | a struggle between a character and an outside force |
| flat character | a character who embodies a single quality and who does not develop in the course of a story |
| foreshadowing | the use of hints and clues to suggest what will happen later in a plot |
| inference | a conclusion based on prior knowledge and observations; an educated guess |
| internal conflict | a problem or struggle within a character |
| myth | a traditional story about gods, ancestors, or heroes, told to explain the natural world or the customs and beliefs of a society. |
| narrator | someone who tells a story |
| personification | a figure of speech in which an object or animal is given human feelings, thoughts, or actions |
| plot | the sequence of events in a story |
| proper noun | names a particular person, place, thing or idea (uppercase) |
| protagonist | the main character, who must overcome obstacles and resolve the conflict |
| round character | a major character who demonstrates some complexity and who develops or changes in the course of a work |
| setting | the time and place of a story |
| simile | a comparison of two unlike things using "like" or "as" |
| situational irony | an outcome that turns out to be very different from what was expected |
| symbol | an object that is used to represent something else (usually a larger, philosophical and more important idea) |
| verbal irony | a figure of speech in which what is said is the opposite of what is meant |
