QuestionAnswer
What is caucus? A private meeting of party leaders to choose candidates for office.
What is nominating convention? The official public meeting of a political party to choose candidates.
What is boss? A powerful party leader.
What is direct primary? An election in which party members select people to run in the general election.
What is closed primary? An election in which only members of political party can vote.
What is open primary? An election in which all voters may participate.
What is plurality? The largest number of votes in an election.
What is runoff primary? A second primary election between the two candidates who received the most votes in the first primary.
What is ticket? The candidates for President and Vice-President.
What is platform? The statement of a political party's principles, beliefs, and positions on vital issues.
What is plank? An individual section of a political party platform.
What are four ways that candidates for public office can get on the ballot? 1. caucus 2. nominating convention 3. primary election 4. petition
Why is the caucus system of choosing candidates is not democratic? It is not democratic because a lot of people do not have a say in selecting the candidate.
What are some of the criticisms of presidential primaries? 1. The image of the candidate is more important than the issues. 2. Primaries extend to long, one in February and one in June. Voters tend to lose interest and it is costly.
Why is proportional representation in presidential primaries is more democratic than winner-take all? In winner-take all, one one candidates gets all the votes. The proportional representation give both candidates an equal opportunity of receiving percentage of votes based on the number of votes they get.
How can people who have not been selected by their party can still become candidates for public office? People can file petition by having collectin signatures from voters.
How might politics, democracy, and government in the United States be affected if there were no primary elections? If there were no primary elections, voters would not get a chance to learn some things about a candidate.
Which do you feel is a better method of choosing candicates, open primary or close primary? Open primary is better because all voters have a chance to vote whereas in a closed primary only members of a partcular party can vote.
What is the purpose of a political party? Their purpose is to win elections and gain control of government at local, state and national levels.
