Covalent Bond A bond between atoms in which electrons are shared
Ionic Bond A bond between atoms in which electrons are lost or gained
Octet Rule Most atoms need eight valence electrons to be stable
Valence Electrons The electrons involved in chemical bonding
Binary Compound A molecule composed of two monatomic ions
Monoatomic Ion An ion like NA+, K+, or Cl-
Oxidation Number A number that indicates how many electrons will be gained or lost during bonding
Polyatomic Ion An ion like Co 2- or OH- 3
