Clinical Ch 41

QuestionAnswer
Basophil Granulocytic white blood cell with dark purple cytoplasmic granules. It is the least common of the white blood cells.
Complete Blood Count (CBC) Battery of hematologic tests consisting of hemoglobin, hematocrit, total white blood cell count, and the erythrocyte indices.
Easinophil Granulocytic white blood cell with red eosin-stained granules in the cytoplasm. It is elevated in cases of allergies.
Erythrocyte Red blood cell, one of the formed elements of the blood.
Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate Measurement of how far the red cells in a sample of blood decrease in one hour.
Erythropoietin Horomone that causes production of new red blood cells.
Hematocrit Percentage of red blood cells within a specimen of anticoagulated whole blood.
Hematology Study of blood and the blood-forming tissues.
Hematopoiesis Formation of blood cells.
Hemoglobin Molecule with the red blood cell that transports oxygen.
Leukocyte White blood cell, one of the formed elements of
Lymphocyte White blood cell with a dense nonsegmented nucleus and lacking granules in the cytoplasm.
Monocyte White blood cell without cytoplasmic granules that has a large convoluted nonsegmented nucleus.
Neutrophil The most common type of granulocytic white blood cell.
Thrombocyte (platelet) cellular fragment of megataryocyte; plays an important role in blood coagulation, hemostasis, and clot formation.
cbc complete blood count
rbc red blood cell
wbc white blood cell
hct hematocrit
hgb hemoglobin
diff differential
ua urinalysis
pt prothrombin time
dvt deep vein thrombosis
ph potential hydrogen Ion Concentration
bun blood urea nitrogen
sed rate sedimentation rate
pcv packed cell volume
osha occupational safety and health administration
fbs fasting blood sugar
rbs random blood sugar
gtt glucose tolerance test
qns quantity not sufficient
wnl within normal limits
stat immediately
hematology study of blood cells and coagulation
blood cells white blood cell, red blood cell, platelet
wbc leukocyte; fight infection/disease
rbc erythrocyte; responsible for supplying oxygen to body cell and remove waste products like carbon dioxide
platelet thrombocyte; responsible for clotting blood
plasma liquid portion of blood (matrix)
5 different kinds of wbc neutrophils-destroys bacteria, lymphocytes-battle viruses, monocytes, easinophils, basophil
hematopoiesis the formation of blood cells
hematologic tests #1 ordered is urinalysis, #2 ordered is cbc
most common blood test ordered is cbc test
hemoglobin, hgb major component of rbc, it helps transport O2 and CO2
hematocrit, hct pcv-packed cell volume
decreased amounts of hemoglobin are caused from 1. nutritional anemia-low iron diet 2. congenital anemia-sickle cell 3. hemorrhagic anemia-blood loss
erythropoietin hormone that produces rbc's
hematocrit and hemoglobin are considered the... h and h
wbc, rbc, platelet are also known as cellular components and formed elements
normal hemoglobin levels in an adult female and male female 12-16 g/dl male 13-18 g/dl
normal hematocrit levels in an adult female and male female 36-46% male 40-55%
wbc - granulocyte and agranulocyte you can have inflammation without infection but you can never have infection without inflammation
most common wbc neutrophils
2nd most common wbc lymphocytes
appendicitis chicken pox allergies tb mononucleosis neutrophils basophils easinophils monocytes lymphocytes
centrifuge spin blood
autoclave sterlize
plasma has _______ and _______ does not fibrinogen; serum
if we measure the buffy coat it gives us what the approximate wbc count-leukocyte count
bun = kidney function
erythropoietin = hormone
normal adult leukocyte counts 4,500-11,000
normal adult # of platelet (thrombocytes) 140,000-400,000

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
