chapter 5 vocabulary

what is an atom? a tiny indivisible particle
what is an isotope? atom with same number of protons and electrons, but different number of neutrons.
what is radiation? process in which substances spontaneously emit radiation
what is a neutron? an uncharged elementary particle that has a mass nearly equal to that of the proton
what is wavelength? the distance in the line of advance of a wave from any one point to the next point of corresponding phase
what is frequency? the number of times that a periodic function repeats the same sequence of values during a unit variation of the independent variable
what is amplitude? the maximum departure of the value of an alternating current or wave from the average value
what is quantum? any of the small subdivisions of a quantized physical magnitude (as magnetic moment)
what is photon? a unit of intensity of light at the retina equal to the illumination received per square millimeter of a pupillary area from a surface having a brightness of one candle per square meter
