| Verbal Irony | a word or phrasee is used to suggest the opposit of its usual meaning |
| Direct Characterization | character traits revealed in narration |
| Dialect | the form of a language spoken in a particular region or group |
| Understatement | deliberately downplaying something for effect |
| Dramatic Irony | a contradiction between what a character thinks and what the reader knows |
| Metaphor | a figure of speech in which one thing is spoken as though it were something else |
| Indirect Characterization | character traits revealed through words, thoughts, or actions of the character or other characters in the story |
| Figurative language | writing or speech not meant to be taken literally |
| Imagery | language used to create word pictures |
| Situational Irony | an event occurs that contradicts the expectations of the characters, the reader or the audience |
| Simile | a figure of speech that makes a direct comparison using like or as |
| Onomatopoeia | words that imitate sounds |
| Personification | a figure of speech in which a nonhuman subject is given human characteristics |
| Rising Action | part of the plot in which the conflict is increasing |
| Resolution | the end of the central conflict |
| Third-person omniscient | the narrator knows and tells what each character thinks and feels |
| Oxymoron | a figure of speech that combines two opposing or contradictory ideas |
| Symbol | antying that stands for or represents something else |
| Climax | part of the plot where the conflict reaches a high point of interest or suspense |
| Point of View | the perspective from which a story is told |
| Third-person Objective | narration that does not provide insight into characters' thoughts or feelings |
| Paradox | a statement that seems to be contradictory but actually presents the truth |
| Exposition | part of the plot that introduces the setting, characters, and basic situation |
| Falling Action | part of the plot where the conflict is leading to resolution |
| Third-person limited | the narrator relates the inner thoughts and feelings of only one character |
| Theme | a central message or insight of a literary work |
