Story Liiterary Terms

| Character | an individual represented in a work of literature |
| Characterization | refers to the methods that a writer uses to develop a character |
| Protagonist | The hero of the narrative or drama |
| Antagonist | The "character" in opposition with the protaginist |
| Plot | THe sequence of events in the story |
| Exposition | The Background information of the story where the characters and the settings are introduced |
| Setting | The time and place of action in a story |
| Mood | In the lhat literary work, the feeling or atmoshere that the writer creates for the reader |
| Rising Action | The events that build up the plot where the conflicts introduced |
| Conflict | Man vs Self/Man/Nature/Society/Technology/Diety(God) |
| Internal Conflict | A struggle within a character |
| External Conflict | A struggle against on outside force; such as, nature, or physical obstacle or another character |
| Forshadowing | Clues or Hints to indicate evnts that will ocur later on in the plot |
| Climax | The momment of highest intesity that points to how the conflict will be solved; also called the turning point |
| Falling Action | The events after the climax |
| Resolution | End of the story where the conflict is cleared up and the loose ends are tied |
| Flashback | A conversation, an episode or an event that happened before the beginning of the story |
| Point of View | The Narrative method used in a short story,novel, or non-fiction selection |
| First Person | Character within the text describes the action in his or hers own words. "I" |
| Seccon Person | Talks directly to the readers,using you to involve him/her in the second story |
| Third Person | Narrator outside of the action describes events and characters. "she/he" |
| Irony (situational) | The difference between the reader a reader or character expects to happen and what actually happens |
| Irony (dramatic) | Where the reader (audience) knows something that the character does not know. |
| Irony (verbal) | Someone knowingly exaggerates, or says one thing and mean another |
| Imagery | A description that recreates vivid sensory experience for the reader |
| Symbol | A person place or object that represents something beyiond itself |
| Allusion | An indirect refernce to another literary work or to a famous person, place, or event |
| Theme | The message or the author is trying to tell the reader about life |
