Eight grade literature terms first nine weeks
| Term | Meaning |

| flashback | A scene in the story that occurs in the past |
| falling action | The events which occur after the climax and lead to the end of the story |
| plot | The series of events in a story. |
| conflict | the problem or struggle in a story |
| exposition | the part of the story that introduces the setting, characters, and conflict or basic situation |
| rising action | the events from the beginning of the story which creates suspense and leads to the climax |
| chronological order | order of events in time |
| climax | climax the turning point or highest point of interest |
| resolution | the solution of the problem or the outcome of events |
| foreshadowing | author's clues to help you find what happens next |
| figurative language | speech not meant to be taken literally |
| minor character | takes part in the story's events but is not the main focus of attention |
| major character | protagonist |
| dynamic character | changes during the story |
| static character | stays the same throughout the story |
| flat character | possesses only one or two personality traits |
| round character | fully developed with many traits |
| direct characterization | the writer actually states the character's traits |
| indirect characterization | the writer reveals information about a character and his personality through that character's thoughts, words, and actions |
| protagonist | (main or major character) the most important character in a story |
| antagonist | a character who causes problems for the main character |
| point of view | who's telling the story |
| 1st person | character tells the story |
| limited 3rd person | narrated by someone not in the story, but only knows the thoughts of one person |
| omniscient 3rd person | told by someone not in the story that knows all the details of the story |
| 2nd person | point of view used frequently when giving instructions. |
| narrator | the person telling the story |
| irony | the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning |
| allusion | a reference to a well-known person, place, event, literary work, or work of art |
| cause | the reason why something happens |
| effect | the result of a cause |
| character | a person or animal who takes part in the action of a literary work |
