TermDefinition
What is the main function of your body system? The primary function of the muscular system is to generate force and cause movement throughout the body
What are the major organs and structures of the system? Three major organs are the skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, and smooth muscle
What does the skeletal muscle do? generates force and movement, stabilizes joints, and regulates body temperature
What does the cardiac muscle do? pumps blood throughout the circulatory system to deliver oxygen and nutrients to tissues and remove metabolic waste.
What does the smooth muscle do? controls movement and flow through hollow organs, blood vessels, and body systems
How does the muscular system work from beginning to end? The muscular system works by turning nerve signals into chemical energy, which then powers protein movement to pull bones or squeeze organs from start to finish
What major processes occur within your system? Metabolism-Converts food and nutrients into energy through catabolism, and Movement & Circulation Pumps blood, circulates oxygen, and drives physical motion through the cardiovasculars ystems
How does your system help maintain homeostasis? The muscular system maintains homeostasis through temperature regulation, blood circulation, respiration, posture, and internal organ function across its three muscle types (skeletal, cardiac, and smooth)
What does muscular system need from other body systems? The muscular system relies on several other body systems for the signals, energy, oxygen, and structure it needs to function
What does muscular system provide to other body systems? The muscular system provides movement, structural support, heat, and internal transport to other body systems through its three types of tissue (skeletal, smooth, and cardiac)
Which three body systems does muscular system interact with most directly? The three body systems that interact with the muscular system most directly are the skeletal system, the nervous system, and the circulatory system
How does the muscular system interact with the skeletal system? Skeletal muscles attach to bones via tendons and pull on them to generate movement, posture, and support
How does the muscular system interact with the nervous system? The brain and spinal cord send electrical impulses and signals (via motor neurons) to trigger muscle contractions for both voluntary and reflex actions.
How does the muscular system interact with the circulatory system? Blood vessels deliver essential oxygen and nutrients to active muscle tissue while removing metabolic waste products like carbon dioxide and lactic acid
What would happen to the body if muscular system stopped functioning properly? The human body would experience immediate, catastrophic failure across nearly every vital system, as muscles control not only voluntary movement but also involuntary processes like breathing, blood circulation, and digestion
How could a problem with muscular system affect other body systems? A problem with the muscular system can impact nearly every other body system because muscles provide essential force, movement, and metabolic support throughout the body
What organs or structures are especially important to muscular system? The muscular system relies on specific muscle types, cellular structures, and connective tissues to generate force and movement
What organs or structures are especially important to muscular system? Three major organs are the skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, and smooth muscle
What hormones, chemicals, signals, or other substances are important to muscular system? Testosterone, Growth Hormone, Insulin, Estrogen, Cortisol
How is muscular system controlled or regulated? The muscular system is primarily controlled and regulated by the nervous system through different pathways depending on whether the muscle type is voluntary or involuntary
How does muscular system respond when the body is under stress? Reflexive Tensing, Blood Flow Shift, Hormone Release, Sustained Tension, and Pain and Spasms
How does muscular system help the body maintain balance? Stabilizing Contractions, Opposing Muscle Groups, Muscle Tone, and Sensory Feedback Loop
What is one interesting or surprising fact about your system? The human body contains over 600 skeletal muscles, making up about 40% of your total body weight
What is one common misconception about muscular system? Unused muscle turns into fat when you stop exercising
What would happen if one major organ in muscular system failed? The impact is immediately life-threatening or severely disabling and the body would lose all movement, breathing, and heartbeat,
How does muscular system change throughout a person's life? The human muscular system grows, matures, and gradually declines through distinct phases from birth to old age
What are some common problems or diseases involving muscular system? Strains, Cramps and Spasms, Tendonitis, and Rhabdomyolysis
What technology or medical tests are used to study muscular system? Range of Motion and Manual Muscle Testing, Deep Tendon Reflexes, and Quantitative Muscle Testing
interesting fact about muscular system your smallest muscle is located in your ear
why is the muscular system important to the survival of the human body? It drives involuntary life support functions like heartbeat and breathing, powers internal digestion and circulation, and enables the physical mobility needed to find food, escape danger, and maintain body heat

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
