| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| what's the most prominent structure of the scapula? | spine (let's us know if we are looking at front or back) |
| what are the bones associated with the shoulder girdle | articulation between clavicle and scapula |
| what are the muscles to know for the shoulder girdle? | pectoralis minor, trapezius, serratus anterior |
| pectoralis minor | origin- 3rd-5th ribs insertion- coracoid process scapula movements- abduction (protraction), downward rotation, depression movements= pushing ex/ bench press or pushups -pulls scapula forward with downward rotation |
| trapezius | upper middle (2) and lower fibers -when all parts work together, they pull the scapula upwards and into adduction -prevents scapula being pulled down -a fixator of scapula which allows for deltoid action |
| trap upper fibers | (weakest) -origin- base of skull, backside ligaments of neck insertion- back of lateral clavicle scap mvmt- elevation mvmt- shrug during clean pulls |
| trap middle fibers | origin- upper back (7th cervical and 3 thoracic vertebrae) insertion- upper border of scapular spine scap mvmt- elevation, abduction (retraction), upward rotation mvmt- rowing, jumping jacks, shrug diring clean pulls |
| trap lower fibers | origin- mid back , (4-12 vertebrae) insertion- base of scapula spine scap mvmt- adduction (retraction), depression, upward rotation mvmt- rowing, jumping jacks |
| serratus anterior | origin- surface of ribs on the side insertion- front medial border of scapula scap mvmt- abduction -protraction), upward rotation mvmt- pushing mvmts (ex/pushups benchpress) cause scapula abduction (protraction) with pec minor |
| adduction (retraction) as it relates to scapula | pinching shoulder blades together ex/ downward motion of bench press |
| abduction (protraction) | reaching for object in front of the body ex/ upward motion of bench press |
| elevation | scap goes up ex/ shrugs |
| depression | scap goes down ex/ farmers walks |
| upward rotation | ex/ upward motion of jumping jacks |
| downward rotation | ex/ down motion of jumping jacks |
| concentric part of movement | -"the harder part of the lift" -muscles are getting shorter (contracting to produce force) ex/ upward motion of squat |
| eccentric part of movement | -"the easier part of the lift" -muscles are lengthening ex/ downward part of squat |
| sternoclavicular joint | arthrodial joint (sliding/gliding, multiaxial) mvmts= up, down front and back ligament support= anterior and posterior sternoclavicular ligaments, costoclavicular ligament |
| acromioclavicular joint | arthrodial joint (sliding/gliding, multiaxial) -sliding, gliding and rotational mvmts, helps other scapular mvmts too ligamentous support- coroclavicular ligaments, s and i acromioclavicular ligments |
| scapulothoracic joint | articulation of scapula over thorax (space btwn scapula and thoracic cage) -not a true synovial joint no ligamentous support! supported by muscles. dependent on acromioclavicular and scapulothoracic joint, if they're not moving this joint isnt moving. |
| what are the joints associated with the true elbow joint | ulna and humerus |
| what are the four rotator cuff muscles? | Supraspinatus Infraspinatus Teres minor Subscapularis |
| supraspinatus | abduction and external rotation |
| infraspinatus | external rotation |
| teres minor | external rotation |
| subscapularis | internal rotation |
| what is the role of the glenoid labrum? | ring of fibrous tissue attached to the rim of glenoid fossa -expands the size & depth of glenoid fossa (deeper socket= more stable joint) increases superior-inferior diameter by 75% increases anterior-posterior diameter by 50% |
| ligament support of the elbow joint | (play more role in in extreme range of motion) -annular ligament -radial collateral ligament (humerus and radius) -ulnar collateral ligament (ulna and humerus) -prevents elbow from abducting -throwing sports place stress on UCL |
