Unit 7: 8.11 A
Natural Events and Climate
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| climate | the pattern of weather in an area over a long period of time. |
| global cooling | a drop in temperature world wide due to ash from a volcano not allowing the suns heat energy to warm the earth. |
| greenhouse gases | gases in the Earth's atmosphere that act as a blanker for our planet. Contain heat that would normally be lost. |
| ocean currents | the movement of water throughout the world's oceans. Help stabilize the Earth's climates |
| natural events | impact climates by altering precipitation and temperature. (Ex: volcanic eruptions, meteor impacts, changes in ocean currents, greenhouse gases) |
| carbon sinks | Natural factors that can take atmospheric CO2 out of the air. (Ex: ocean water, soil, and trees) |
| glaciers | massive forms of ice that have formed by snow compacting and refreezing over time. Melting of these can slow down ocean current movement, create greater temperature extremes, and raise ocean levels. |
