PSYCH 2.1 ab
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| perception | the process of organizing and interpreting sensory information, enabling us to recognize meaningful objects and events |
| selective attention | our tendency to focus on just a particular stimulus among the many that are being received --> pay attention to only a few at a time |
| cocktail party effect | you focused your attention on one particular voice |
| selective inattention | our directed attention is elsewhere, causing us to miss other stimuli |
| inattentional blindness | failing to see visible objects when our attention or focus is directed elsewhere *UNAWARE* |
| change blindness | failing to notice changes in the visual environment *SWITCH* |
| priming | the activation, often unconsciously, of certain associations, thus predisposing one's perception, memory, or response --> *buttering them up* |
| perceptual set | a mental disposition to perceive one thing and not another |
| figure ground | the organization of the visual Field into objects (the figures) that stand out from their surroundings (the ground) |
| proximity | a Gestalt law of grouping --> we group nearby figures together |
| continuity | a Gestalt law of grouping --> we perceive smooth, continuous patterns rather than discontinuous ones |
| closure | a Gestalt law of grouping --> we fill in gaps to create a complete, whole object |
| visual cliff | a model of a cliff with a "drop-off" area that was actually covered by sturdy glass |
| binocular cues | depth cues ghat depend on the use of two eyes |
| retinal disparity | the brain computes distance -- the greater the disparity (difference) between the two images, the closer the object |
| convergence | the inward angle of the eyes focusing on a near object |
| monocular cues | depth cues available to each eye separately |
| relative height | we perceive objects higher in our field of vision as farther away |
| relative size | the one that casts the smaller retinal image is farther away |
| interposition | if one object partially blocks our view of another, we perceive it as closer |
| relative motion | the motion or speed of any object in respect it a particular point |
| linear perspective | parallel lines appear to meet in the distance |
| light & shadow | shading produces a sense of depth |
| stroboscopic movement | our brain perceives a rapid series of slightly varying images as continuous movement *CARTOON EFFECT* |
| phi phenomenon | we perceive two adjacent stationary lights blinking as one single light moving back and forth *LIGHTED SIGNS* |
| perceptual constancy | top-down process that recognizes objects without being deceived by changes in their color, brightness, shape, or size |
| color constancy | perceiving familiar objects as having consistent color |
| brightness constancy | we perceive an object as having a constant brightness |
| shape constancy | we perceive an object as having an unchanging shape |
| size constancy | we perceive an object as having an unchanging size |
| perceptual adaptation | the ability to adjust to changed sensory input |
