Biology Lab 6

QuestionAnswer
Prokaryote Undergo Binary Fission, asexual reproduction, quick process due to having no nucleus, less chromosomes, etc.
Eukaryotic Cell Cycle; why? For growth, development, reproduction, and to repair/replace cells, longer procedure due to having a nucleus, more chromosomes, organelles, etc., identical process-daughter cells are identical to parent cell
1. Interphase Growth, preparation; nothing is dividing
1a. Gap 1 Growth; the cell increases in size and synthesizes proteins(necessary for DNA replication), organelles, and cytoplasm
1b. Synthesis DNA replication, chromosomes are duplicated – cells now have 2 full sets of DNA, if the parent cell has 23 chromosomes, then the daughter cells will have 23 chromosomes
1c. Gap 2 Checkpoint; checkpoint to check if G1 and S phase were completed correctly, any errors in DNA can lead to cell death or mutations
2. Mitosis Nuclear division
2a. Prophase Nuclear envelope and nucleolus no longer visible, chromatin condenses into visible chromosomes, spindle fibers form
2b. Metaphase Chromosomes are lined up across middle of the cell
2c. anaphase Sister chromatids are pulled apart and dragged to opposite sides of the cell (A away)
2d. telophase Two polar sets of DNA nuclear envelope re-forms around each set (Animal cells look for indentations) (Plant cells looks for a line in the middle), DNA is more condensed in this phase than in anaphase
cytokinesis Cytoplasmic division, occurs at same time as telophase but not a apart of mitosis; the cytoplasm divides and daughter cell forms
Cleavage furrow (cytokinesis) a shallow groove or indentation that forms in the plasma membrane of animal and some algal cells during the final stage of cell division called cytokinesis
Cell Plate Formation (cytokinesis) a shallow groove or indentation that forms in the plasma membrane of animal and some algal cells during the final stage of cell division called cytokinesis.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
