| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| A band | The dark bands in skeletal and cardiac muscle cells under the microscope, made up primarily of myosin filaments. The "A" stands for anisotropic, meaning the band appears dark when viewed under polarized light. |
| Abductor muscle | A muscle that moves a body part away from the midline of the body. The prefix means 'away from', and xxxxxx means 'to lead' or 'pull.' |
| Actin filament | The thin protein filament in muscle cells that slides past myosin during contraction to create movement. The word comes from Greek, meaning 'to do' or 'to act'. |
| Adductor muscle | A muscle that moves a body part toward the midline of the body. The prefix means 'toward', and xxxxxx means 'to lead' or 'pull'. |
| Adenosine diphosphate (ADP) | A molecule with two phosphate groups that must be recharged to ATP to provide energy for muscle contraction. When ATP loses one phosphate group during energy release, it becomes ADP. |
| Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) | The energy molecule that powers all muscle contraction and relaxation by releasing energy when it loses a phosphate group. Often called the "energy currency" of cells. |
| Aerobic metabolism |
