Unit 3 Lesson 2
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is high pressure? | large body of circulating air with high pressure at its center and lower pressure outside |
| What is low pressure? | large body of circulating air with low pressure at its center and higher pressure outside |
| What way do high and low pressure move? | Clockwise and counterclockwise |
| What are air masses? | large bodies of air that have uniform temperature, humidity, and pressure |
| What is an arctic air mass? | Contain bitterly cold, dry air. Bring temperature down to -40'C |
| What are continental polar air masses? | They are fast-moving. They bring cold temperatures in the winter and cool temperatures in the summer. |
| What are maritime polar air masses? | Cold, humid. Form over the northern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Includes cloudy and rainy weather. |
| What are continental tropical air masses? | Hot, dry. Form over dry, desert land. Clear skies and high temperatures. Usually form during the summer |
| What are maritime tropical air masses? | Form over western Atlantic Ocean. They bring hot, humid air to the southeastern US during the summer. In winter, they bring heavy snow |
| What are cold fronts? | When a colder air mass moves toward a warmer air mass. Clouds form. Showers and thunderstorms. |
| What are fronts? | A weather front is a boundary between two air masses. Air masses with different characteristics can collide |
| What are warm fronts? | It forms when less dense, warmer air moves toward colder, denser air. These clouds often bring steady rain or snow for several hours or even days |
| What are stationary fronts? | Warm air will be on one side and cold air will be on the other side. |
| What are occuluded fronts? | Sometimes a fast-moving cold front catches up with a slow-moving warm front |
