QuestionAnswer
epithelial membranes cutaneous, mucous, and serous membranes covering and lining membrane
cutaneous membranes two layers dermis, and epidermis, dry membrane that holds organs and covers and protects tissue
mucous membrane epithelium laying on areolar connective tissue (lamina propria) lines body cavities open to outside moist membranes
serous membrane lines compartments in ventral cavity, occur in pairs with a parietal (inside) and visceral(outside) layers with serous fluid inbetween
parietal membrane the outer layer of a serous membrane that lines the inner walls of body cavities
visceral membrane the inner layer of a serous membrane that adheres directly to the surface of an internal organ
peritoneum serous membrane lining the abdominal cavity
Pluera serous membrane surrounding the lungs
pericardia serous membrane surrounding the heart
synovial memebrane composed of loose areolar connective tissue only line fibrous capsule around the joints
integumentary system the skin and its appendages
keratin fibrous protein that makes up the epidermis
cutaneous sensory receptors specialized nerve structures in the skin that convert external physical and chemical stimuli into electrical nerve signals
epidermis the outermost layer of the skin in human anatomy, serving as a tough protective barrier against water loss, pathogens, and UV radiation
dermis is the thick, fibrous middle layer of human skin located directly beneath the epidermis and superficial to the subcutaneous fat layer providing strength and elasticity
hypodermis innermost layer of the skin made up mostly of fat cells providing insulation
stratum basale/germinativum deepest layer of the epidermis made of stem cells connected to the dermis by basement membrane
stratum spinosum second deepest layer of epidermis
stratum granulosum 3rd most superficial layer of epidermis below stratum lucidum
stratum lucidum second most superficial layer, only on thick hairless skin(palms and soles of feet)
stratum corneum most superficial layer of densely keratinized cells
melanin skin pigment in between yellow brown and black produced by melanocytes stored in stratum basale
dermal papillae peglike projections from the superficial surface indent the epidermis many carrying capillary loops
sebaceous gland oil glands with ducts usually opening into a hair follicle
sudoriferous glands sweat glands eccrine, and apocrine glands opening into pores through ducts or hair follicles
hair follicle a tube-like skin structure located in the dermis and epidermis that anchors the hair root and produces the hair shaft
lunula the visible, pale, crescent-shaped area located at the base of a fingernail or toenail part of the nail matrix
