Matter Review
These flashcards should be used to review for our matter unit.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| Atom | Particle that makes up Matter. Smallest component of an element. |
| Element | A substance made of atoms that are identical. Example: Iron (Fe) |
| Mass | The amount of matter in an object. To be measured in grams. |
| Volume | A quantity of three-dimensional space occupied by a liquid, solid, or gas. |
| Density | The amount of a substance that is in a specific amount of space. Density = Mass/Volume |
| Solubility | A substance's ability to mix with another substance, or to dissolve into it |
| State/Phase | A physically distinctive form of matter, such as a solid, liquid, gas or plasma |
| Temperature | The measurement of the amount of kinetic (or motion) energy within a substance. |
| Melting | A process that turns a solid into a liquid when heat is applied. |
| Freezing | a phase transition that occurs when a substance changes from a liquid to a solid due to a decrease in temperature. |
| Sublimation | a phase transition, or change of state, where a substance turns from a solid to a gas without becoming a liquid first |
| Condensation | the process by which water vapor turns into liquid |
| Evaporation | the process by which a liquid turns into water vapor when heat is applied. |
| Deposition | a phase change where a gas directly turns into a solid, skipping the liquid phase. |
| Boiling Point | The temperature where the molecules change rapidly from the liquid state to the gas state throughout the whole liquid. |
| Formula for Density | Density = mass/volume (M/V) |
| Formula for Mass | Mass = density x volume (DxV) |
| Formula for Volume | Volume = Mass/Density (M/D) |
| Who came up with the idea for displacement | Archimedes (Archimedes Principle) |
| What is the density of water? | 1.0 g/ml |
| If something has a density that is MORE than 1.0 g/ml, what will happen? | It will sink |
| If something has a density that is LESS than 1.0 g/ml, what will happen? | It will float |
| Which state of matter has a definite volume, but not a definite shape? | Liquid |
| Compound | Molecules that are made from two different kinds of atoms are compounds. |
| What do scientists use to organize elements? | Periodic Table |
| Which state of matter has a definite volume, and a definite shape? | Solid |
| Which state of matter does not have a definite volume or a definite shape? | Gas |
| Which particles move the fastest? Solid/Liquid/Gas | Gas |
| Which particles move the slowest? Solid/Liquid/Gas | Solid |
| Out of the ones listed, which properties are constant? Mass/Density/Melting Point/Volume/Boiling Point/Solubility | Density/Melting Point/Boiling Point/Solubility |
| Out of the ones listed, which properties are NOT constant? Mass/Density/Melting Point/Volume/Boiling Point/Solubility | Mass/Volume |
| What would you add to a solid to turn it into a liquid? | Thermal energy |
| What has a greater density, 100 g of oxygen or 100 g of silver? | 100 g of silver |
| Which has the greater solubility? 16g of zinc or 8g of zinc? | They have the same solubility |
