Why is it important to address spelling difficulties? Poor spelling can hamper writing and convey a negative impression even when the content of the writing is excellent.

Suggestion for teaching spelling to students with LD 1 Provide systematic phonics instruction that incorporates teaching of phonemic awareness (helps regulate spelling "rules")
Suggestion for teaching spelling to students with LD 2 Teach common irregular words from the earliest stages of spelling
Suggestion for teaching spelling to students with LD 3 Teach useful spelling rules
Suggestion for teaching spelling to students with LD 4 Teach spelling of important grade-appropriate words
Suggestion for teaching spelling to students with LD 5 Emphasize activities that involve writing or building printed words, NOT oral spelling. (which is not as effective as activities that require students to look carefully at the printed word)
