Thermal Energy
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| thermal energy | The energy of a substance's particles due to their motion and interactions. |
| temperature | A measure of the average kinetic energy of particles in a substance. |
| heat (heat transfer) | The transfer of thermal energy from one object or place to another because of a temperature difference. |
| kinetic energy | The energy of motion. |
| conduction | Transfer of thermal energy through direct contact between particles or objects. |
| convection | Transfer of thermal energy by the movement of a liquid or gas caused by temperature and density differences. |
| radiation | Transfer of thermal energy by electromagnetic waves that can travel through empty space. |
| thermal equilibrium | When objects have the same temperature and there is no net transfer of thermal energy. |
| particles | Tiny pieces of matter. |
| conductor | A material that transfers thermal energy easily. |
| insulator | A material that slows the transfer of thermal energy. |
| convection current | The movement of a liquid or gas caused by temperature and density differences. |
| infrared radiation | Electromagnetic radiation emitted by objects. Thermal cameras detect it to display apparent surface temperatures. |
| system | The object or group of objects being studied. |
