| What is a selectively permeable membrane? | Selectively permeable membrane allows some but not all substances to pass through. |
| What is an advantage of having a selectively permeable membrane? | Only certain substances are let in or out of cell. E.g Water, oxygen and carbon dioxide can pass through. Proteins, sugar and salts do not pass through freely. |
| What cell components contain membranes and are selectively permeable? | Cell membrane, Mitochondria membrane, Chloroplast membrane and Nucleus membrane |
| What is diffusion? | Diffusion is when molecules move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. Diffusion is a passive process (does not require energy) |
| Example of diffusion in the lungs | Oxygen diffuses from the alveoli (lungs) into the capillary. Carbon dioxide and water vapour diffuses from capillary into the alveoli (lungs). |
| Other examples of diffusion in humans | Glucose diffuses into the blood from intestines |
| Name two substances that enter muscle cells from the blood by diffusion | Glucose/oxygen |
| Example of diffusion in the leaf | Carbon dioxide diffuses from the atmosphere and into the leaf through the stomata. Oxygen diffuses from the leaf into the atmosphere. |
