Atmosphere and Heat

| weather | the condition of Earth's atmosphere at a particular time and place |
| atmosphere | the mixture of gasses that surround Earth |
| Greenhouse Effect | the trapping of heat near Earth's surface |
| troposphere | the lowest layer of Earth's atmosphere, where weather occurs |
| stratosphere | the second-lowest layer of Earth's atmosphere; the ozone layer is located in the upper portion; airplanes prefer to fly here |
| ozone | found in the upper stratosphere; absorbes much of the sun's harmful UV rays |
| mesosphere | the middle layer of the Earth's atmosphere; coldest layer; meteors burn up here |
| thermosphere | the outermost layer of the Earth's atmosphere; divided into two sublayers-ionosphere and exosphere; hottest layer |
| ionosphere | the lower portion of the thermosphere; important for radio communications; creates auroral displays (Aurora Borealis/Northern Lights) |
| exosphere | the outer portion of the thermosphere, extending out into space; layer where satelites orbit |
| altitude | elevation above sea level |
| air pressure | a force that is the result of a column of air pushing down on an area |
| air pollution | a change in the atmosphere that has harmful effects |
| conduction | the transfer of energy between molecules when they bump or topuch |
| convection | the transfer of energy by the movement of fluids. A fluid can be a liquid or a gas |
| radiation | the transfer of energy through space in the form of electromagnetic waves |
