| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| How is a cell like a sports stadium? | A cell is like a sports stadium because everything has a job and a function. Each cell has its own function just like a stadium. |
| What processes does a cell carry out? | Cells grow, repair and produce.if cells are injured cells will reproduce and create new ones to repair themselves. |
| What can a protozoan do? | It can do everything a normal animal can do but it’s just one single cell. (is unicellular) |
| What are the three structures in a cell that carry out life functions and what do they do? | cell membrane : protects the cell and what goes in and out of the cell genetic material (DNA): contains information that directs all of the cells function Cytoplasm: Surrounds and supports the cell's structure and the organelles |
| What are the two categories of cells and how are they similar and different? | The different categories are prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Similarity: both have ribosomes, cell membrane, nucleus/ genetic info, and cytoplasm. Difference: a prokaryotic cell is usually unicellular and eukaryotic cells are multicellular |
| How does a cell membrane work? | The cell membrane surrounds and protects the cell and controls what materials go in and out of it |
| What are the similarities and differences between a plant cell and an animal cell? | Similarity: They are both eukaryotic cells Difference:A plant cell has a cell wall, vacuole and chloroplasts but an animal cell doesn't |
| Compare the cell wall to the cell membrane. | A cell wall supports and surrounds the entire cell on the other hand the cell membrane controls what goes in and out of the cell. |
| When should you use a 2D model versus a 3D model? | You should use a 2d model when you need an easier model to make and label. You should use a 3d model when you need to see exactly where everything is. |
| Why does a cell need to be small? What happens if it is too large? | A cell needs to be small so that the materials that enter the cell can pass through quickly. If a cell is too large, waste cannot properly exit the cell and nutrients can't enter quickly enough to fuel the cell process. |
| What is Lynn Margulis contribution to our understanding of cells? | she contributed to our understanding of cells by telling us that there might be a possibility that smaller cells were engulfed by larger cells.Making her believe that the mitochondria and chloroplasts of today descended from living bacteria. |
| Cell membrane (definition) | protects the cell and controls the materials that go in and out of it |
| Cytoplasm | Surrounds and supports the organelles |
| Genetic material | contains information that directs all the cells functions |
| Ribosome | makes proteins inside the cytoplasm |
| Cell wall | provides structural support for plant cells and some prokaryotic cells |
| Flagellum | moves the prokaryote through its environment |
| Organelles | small membrane-bound structures in the cytoplasm that are specified to perform a specific function |
| Protozoan | a single celled unicellular organism |
