| atom | the smallest particle of a element that can exist alone and keep the same characteristics of the element |
| covalent bond | the sharing of electrons between atoms |
| decomposition | to separate a substance into smaller parts that differ from the original substance |
| element | a substance made of only one type of atom |
| enzyme | a protein that increases the rate of chemical reaction without being changed by the reaction |
| ion | an electrically charged particle created from the gain or loss of electrons |
| isotope | an atom that gives off nonnuclear radiation and has the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons compared to the normal atom |
| product | a substance that enters into and is altered by a chemical reaction |
| synthesis | to combine in order to form something new |
| inquiry | the systematic process of using knowledge and skills to acquire and apply it to new knowledge |
| mass | the measure of the amount of matter an object has; the number of atoms in an object |
| matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| volume | the amount of space and object occupies |
| hypothesis | a possible explanation that can be tested |
