patterns of circulation in the ocean
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| circulate | to cycle continuously |
| density | the measurement of how much mass of a substance is contained in a given volume |
| salinity | the amount of degree of salt in a substance |
| Energy in the ocean | unequal heating causes global winds on land and global patterns of movement in the ocean. Also know as currents |
| Currents | large streams of water that flow through the ocean. they move warm water from equator to the poles and cool water from poles to equator. |
| Deep Currents | Movement of cold ,dense water in the ocean caused by colder or saltier water. They move very slowly it may take more than 1,000 years to make a full trip around ocean |
| Surface Current | Movement of ocean water near the surface, mainly caused by global wind |
| When a surface Current moves from the equator towards the poles it will get denser why? | because it cools and becomes saltier as water evaporates. |
| What kind of water does ice contain? | Ice contains only fresh water. It leaves behind the salt in the ocean. This cold, salty water sinks and flows along the ocean floor as a deep current |
| What is a Gulf Stream | a current that carries warm water from the tropics, along the Eastern United States, and toward Western Europe. The Gulf Stream follows this path because of global winds and the shape of the North American continent, which guide the current's path |
| How do landmasses affect how a current moves? | the edges of continents and islands block and redirect those currents, but once the current's meet land, they must find a new path |
| In the northern hemisphere which way does moving air and weather curve? | to the right |
| In the southern hemisphere which way does moving air and water curve? | to the left |
| Why does the the Gulf Stream follows the Eastern coast of the United States? | Global winds over the water, while the shape of North America helps guide its path. |
| Does the Gulf Stream carry carry warm or cold water? | warm water from the tropics |
| What 3 factors affect ocean surface currents? | Global Winds, Coriolis Effect and Landmasses |
| ***most important to remember | Global winds drive ocean surface currents, the Coriolis effect curves their paths, and Landmasses redirect their movement |
| Why are areas near the equator warmer that areas near the poles? | Area near the equator receive more direct solar energy from the sun |
| How do large bodies of water affect the climate of nearby Land? | They moderate temperatures, making summers cooler and winters warmer often create wetter conditions |
| Why do inland areas have greater temperature ? | They are far from large bodies of water that help moderate temperatures |
