Matter is made of atoms
Atoms are made of protons, neutrons, and electrons
Elements are made of ONE type of atom
Compounds are made of TWO or more types of atoms
Glucose is another example of a compound
Glucose C6H12O6 is a type of sugar
Ions are charged atoms
Ions can be negative or positive (sodium ion = Na+
Mixtures combined physically but not chemically (mix of sugar and salt)
Solutions are even mixtures
Something will dissolve in a solution
Suspensions are mixtures that will settle (muddy water)
Organic compounds contain carbon and hydrogen
There are FOUR types of organic compounds
Carbohydrates sugars, starches, and cellulose
Lipids fats, oils, and waxes
Proteins hair, skin, enzymes
Nucleic Acids DNA, RNA
Inorganic Compounds usually do NOT have carbon. (water has hydrogen and oxygen)
