Ecology
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Predator | an organism that kills and consumes another living organism (its prey) to obtain energy |
| Herbivore | an animal that primarily feeds organisms that produce their own food, such as plants, algae, and photosynthesizing bacteria |
| Decomposer | organism—such as bacteria or fungi—that breaks down dead organic matter into simpler substances, recycling nutrients back into the ecosystem. |
| Scavenger | an organism that primarily consumes dead or decaying organic matter—such as carrion or rotting plant material—and plays a key role in nutrient recycling within ecosystems |
| Carnivore | an organism that primarily consumes other animals, playing a key role in food webs and ecosystem balance. |
| Omnivore | an organism that consumes both plant and animal matter |
| Ecology | the study of life |
| 5 levels of organization | 1. organisms 2. population 3.community 4. ecosystem 5. biosphere |
| Consumer | a heterotrophic organism that cannot make its own food and must obtain energy by eating plants, animals, or organic matter |
| Abiotic | the non‑living physical and chemical components of an environment—such as sunlight, temperature, water, soil, and atmospheric gases |
| Biotic | all living or once‑living components of an ecosystem, including plants, animals, fungi, bacteria |
| Symbiosis | a close relationship between two different organisms. |
| Mutualism | when both organisms benefit (+,+) |
| commensalism | when one organism benefits and the other is unaffected (+,0) ex |
| parasitism | when one organism benefits and the other IS harmed (+,-) ex mosquito and human |
| habitat | natural environment where the organism lives and finds basic need to survice |
| Niche | the position or role an organism has within its habitat |
| organism | a living thing |
| population | a group of living things of the same species that live in a specific area |
| community | made up of all the populations of different species that live and interact in an area. |
| ecosystem | a community of organisms and their abiotic enviroment |
| biosphere | the thing layer of earth and its atmosphere where life exists. |
| producer | organisms that make their own food ex photosynthesis (plants) |
| food chain | a diagram that shows how energy in food flows from one organism to another |
| food web | a diagram that shows the feeding relationships between organisms in an ecosystem and is made up of different food chains. |
| adaptation | any characteristic that improves their ability to survive and reproduce |
