Wetlands Services
Environmental Science- Unit 6
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Aerenchyma | spongy tissue and channels within the leaves, stems and roots of plants, allowing air to pass through, providing oxygen for growth |
| Aerial Roots | root structures which can grow out of the ground, down from the plant's stem and even above water surfaces, allowing exposed roots to take in oxygen; also called pneumatophores |
| Anaerobic | contains low or no oxygen |
| Aquifers | geological formations where water is stored underground |
| Baseflow Contribution | recharge of shallow groundwater contributing to stream flow |
| Biological Productivity | measurement of the rate in which energy can be consumed within an ecosystem resulting in a growth in biomass |
| Biological Uptake | biological processes occurring naturally in the ecosystem removing contaminants |
| Carbon Markets | used to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions |
| Chemical Processes | occur due to the slow flow and long residence time of water in wetlands, allowing sunlight and bacteria to degrade some pesticides, herbicides and residues of pharmaceuticals |
| Cypress Knees | root structures found on cypress trees which protrude above the soil |
| Denitrification | process in which bacteria convert inorganic nitrogen (from fertilizer runoff) into harmless dinitrogen gas |
| Detrital | dead material |
| Economic Benefits | services provided by wetlands which are valuable to landowners, communities, businesses and governments |
| Floating Leaves | adaptations to allow aquatic plants to root in flooded areas but maintain leaves and flowers above water to achieve photosynthesis |
| Groundwater Recharge | process of replenishing water stored underground in geological formations called aquifers |
| Hydrodynamics | speed and direction of water flow |
| Hydroperiod | depth, duration and frequency of flooding |
| Hydrophytic | water-loving |
| Mitigation Banks | wetland creation or restoration projects completed in anticipation of wetland impacts nearby |
| Nutrient Cycling | process of moving organic and inorganic matter throughout an ecosystem |
| Physical Trapping | wetland vegetation slowing water, which allows sediment and other particulate material to settle on the floor of the wetland |
| Provisional Services | marketable products derived from wetlands, such as fresh water, commercial fisheries, timber, fuel and fiber |
| Riparian Wetlands | wetlands along the banks of rivers |
| Stopover Sites | habitats migratory birds will utilize to gather resources along the flyway during bi-annual migration |
| Storm Surges | abnormally high sea tides caused by hurricanes and other extreme weather events |
| Subsidence | sinking or collapse of land |
| Substrate | earthy material covering ground such as dirt, rocks, sand or soil |
| Water Quality Trading | allows organizations to be paid to reduce the amount of pollution they discharge |
| Wetland Hydrology | study of properties and movement of water within wetland habitats |
| Wetland Mitigation | credits purchased to offset wetland losses, which cannot be avoided or minimized under state or federal regulations |
| Wetlands | areas flooded or saturated by water and support vegetation adapted for life in saturated soil conditions |
