Important Algebra 1 OST Vocab
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Rate of change or slope | measures how much one quantity changes in relation to another quantity over time or across an interval |
| Rate of Change= | the change in y divided by the change in x |
| Ordered pairs | a pair of two numbers written in a specific, fixed order inside parentheses, usually in the form (x,y) |
| Coefficient | a number or symbol that multiplies a variable or set of variables in an algebraic term. It sits in front of the variable. Ex. ‘5’ in 5x + 7 is a coefficient. |
| Constant | a number that never changes and stays fixed within a specific problem or equation. Ex. ‘7’ in 5x + 7 |
| Distributive Property | a(b + c) = ab + ac |
| Like terms | algebraic terms that have the exact same variables raised to the exact same powers, differing only in their numerical coefficients. Ex. 3x+5x=8x |
| Initial value | the starting value or output of a function when the input (x or time) is zero |
| Intercept | the point where a graph crosses or touches the x or y axis |
| Intersection | two or more objects (such as lines, curves) cross, meet, or overlap, sharing a common point |
| Axis | two lines that intersect at (0, 0) making a coordinate plane. |
| X-axis | horizontal line going left (negative) and right (positive) |
| Y-axis | vertical line going down (negative) and up (positive) |
| Quadrants | 4 sections created by the intersection of of the x and y axis |
| Quadrant 1 | top right (+, +) |
| Quadrant 2 | - top left (-, +) |
| Quadrant 3 | bottom left (-, -) |
| Quadrant 4 | bottom right (+, -) |
