inflammation
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| What is inflammation | General, nonspecfic response to tissue damage resulting from a variety of causes |
| 2 types of inflammation? | Acute -short develops quickly, benficial Chronic- long-lasting, causes damage/death to tissues, results in disease |
| Signs/symtoms of inflammation? | Redness, localized heat, edema (swelling), and pain |
| Benificial why | Dilation and increased permeability of blood vesels Migration of phagocytes Tissue repair |
| Chemicals that promote dilation | Bradykinin, Prostaglandins, Leukotrines, and histamine |
| Bradykinin | Forms when the process of blood clotting follows damage to a blood vessel trigger conversion of a plasma protein into a peptide that is a powerful vasodilator |
| Prostaglandins | Released by patrolling macrophages, using Toll-like recptors and NOD proteins to identify invaders |
| Leukotrines | Released by the same cells that release prostaglandins |
| Histamine | Released by basophils, platlets, and mast cells (located in connective tissue), when they are exposed to complement fragment C3a or C5a |
| General purpse of chemicals | They allow more blood into the site of infection. |
| Why hurt | Pressure on closeby nerve endings |
| Steps | Dilation and increased permerability of blood vessels Migration of phagocytes Tissue repair |
