| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Asexual reproduction | The production of genetically identical offsprings from a single parent. |
| Sexual reproduction | Offsprings produced by sexual reproduction inherit some of their genetics information from each parent |
| Chromosome | Genetic information is bundled into packages of DNA |
| Chromatid | Duplicated cromosomes condeses to appear as two thick strands known as sisters chromatids |
| Gene | An idividual's characteristics are determined by the factors thatvare passed from on parental generation to the next. |
| Allele | Many genes exist in several different forms and are therefore said to have multiple alleles. |
| Meiosis | The process in which the number of chromosomes per cell is cut in half through the separation of homologus chromosomes in a diploid cell. |
| Homologous chromosomes | Two sets of chromosomes are homologous, meaning that each of the four chromosomes from the male parent has a corresponding chromosome from the female parent |
| Tetrad | In prophase 1 of miosis, each replicated chromosome pairs with its corresponding homologous chromosome. |
| Crossing Over | Bits and pieces of the homologous chromosomes are exchanged. |
| Gamete | Reproductive cells, that contains genes |
| Diploid | The cells of most adult organisms contain two complete sets of inherited chromosomes and two complete sets of genes. |
| Haploid | Cells that have a single set of chromosomes, and, therefore, a single set of gens. |
