| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Oil Pump | Draws oil from sump and pumps it under pressure through engine galleries. |
| Pressure Relief Valve | Limits maximum oil pressure to protect seals, filter, and galleries during high RPM or cold starts. |
| Full-Flow | 100% of oil passes through filter before reaching bearings (Standard modern design). |
| Bypass | Only a small percentage filtered at a time. |
| Filter Bypass Valve | Unfiltered oil bypasses the filter directly to galleries to prevent immediate bearing seizure. |
| Oil Strainer | Coarse wire mesh that prevents large debris from entering and jamming the oil pump. |
| Oil Galleries | Cast or drilled internal passages in the cylinder block and head that direct pressurized oil to crankshaft, camshafts, and valve gear. |
| Wet Sump | Oil stored in pan at bottom of engine block. |
| Dry Sump | Oil drains to shallow pan, pumped to external tank by scavenge pump, fed by separate pressure pump. |
