LS2e3ab Unit 2
Cell Transport, Cellular Organization, Uni vs. Multicellular
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| passive transport | movement of molecules across the cell membrane that doesn't require energy (examples: water, oxygen, carbon dioxide) |
| diffusion | movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration can occur anywhere |
| osmosis | movement of water molecules across the cell membrane, from an area of high to low concentration |
| Molecule | two or more atoms chemically bonded together. |
| Organism | a living thing. ex. Unicellular or Multicellular |
| Organ System | organs working together to do a job, ex. Heart, arteries, veins, blood=circulatory system |
| Organ | -groups of tissues working together to do the same job, ex. Heart |
| Tissue | group of the same cells that work together to perform a specific job; Ex. muscle cells of heart |
| Cell | Smallest part of a living thing |
| Form Fits Function | -the shape of structures in a living thing helps it do do specific jobs. |
| Cell Specialization | generic young stem cells develop into specific cells that have certain jobs/roles; Ex. red blood cells, nerve cells |
| Homeostasis | stable internal balance; equilibrium |
| Unicellular | One celled organism, ex: bacteria |
| Multicellular | Many celled organisms |
