|---|---|
| angle | An angle is formed wherever two lines, line segments, or rays intersect. |
| area | The measurement of the inside of a two-dimensional figure. The number of square units needed to cover a two- dimensional figure. |
| area model | A rectangular diagram used to model multiplication and division of numbers. |
| Associative Property of Multiplication | Factors can be regrouped and the product remains the same. |
| Commutative Property of Multiplication | Numbers can be multiplied in any order and the product remains the same. |
| composite figures | A two- or three- dimensional figure that can be decomposed into smaller figures. |
| Distributive Property of Multiplication | A multiplication fact can be broken apart into the sum of two other multiplication facts. |
| dividend | A quantity that is to be divided. |
| divisor | A number by which another number is divided. |
| equation | A number sentence that uses an equal sign (=) to show that the value on its left side is the same as the value on its right side. |
| expression | A mathematical phrase that does not contain an equal sign (=) or an inequality symbol (≠) |
| factors | The numbers multiplied together to find a product. |
| formula | An equation that uses symbols to relate two or more quantities. |
| intersecting lines | Lines that cross at one point. |
| line | A straight path that extends infinitely in both directions. Represented in diagrams as a line with arrowheads at both ends. |
| line of symmetry | A line that divides a figure into two parts with the same shape and size. When the figure is folded along the line of symmetry, the two parts are the same. |
| line segment | A section of a line that has two endpoints |
| line symmetric | A figure that can be folded on a line to form two halves that fit exactly on top of each other. |
| parallel lines (sides) | Lines that never intersect |
| parallelogram | A quadrilateral containing two pairs of parallel sides. A member of the following shape classes: polygons, quadrilaterals, trapezoids. Sub-classes include rectangles, rhombi, and squares. |
| perimeter | The sum of the side lengths of a polygon. |
| perpendicular lines (sides) | Intersecting lines that form right angles/square corners/square angles. |
| point | An exact position often marked by a dot. |
| polygon | A closed two-dimensional figure composed of a least three straight sides and three vertices. |
| quadrilateral | A polygon with exactly four sides and four vertices. Subclasses include trapezoids, parallelograms, rectangles, rhombi, and squares. |
| ray | A part of a line that has one endpoint and continues on forever in one direction |
| rectangle | A quadrilateral containing four right angles and opposite sides are congruent. A member of the following shape classes: polygons, quadrilaterals, trapezoids, and parallelograms |
| rhombus | A quadrilateral containing four equal-length sides. Subclasses include: polygons, quadrilaterals, trapezoids, and parallelograms and square |
| right angle | An angle measuring exactly 90°. |
| side | A line segment forming part of a polygon. |
| square | A quadrilateral with four right angles and four equal sides. A member of the following shape classes: polygons, quadrilaterals, trapezoids, parallelograms, rectangles, rhombuses |
| square angle/square | Where the corners of a polygon make a square |
| corner | A point where two or more lines, line segments, or curves meet or intersect. |
| square unit | A measure of area. |
| trapezoid | A quadrilateral with at least one pair of parallel sides. Subclasses include: parallelogram, rectangles, rhombus, and squares. |
| triangle | A polygon with exactly three sides, three vertices, and three interior angles. |
