Dust Bowl Vocab WP

TermDefinition
Drought A long time with little or no rain. During the Dust Bowl, drought dried out the soil and made it hard for crops to grow.
System A group of parts that work together and affect one another. Earth’s land, water, air, and living things form a system.
Hydrosphere All the water on Earth, including water in rivers, underground, and in the air.
Atmosphere The layer of gases surrounding Earth. During the Dust Bowl, strong winds carried dust through the air.
Geosphere The solid parts of Earth, including rocks, land, and soil. During the Dust Bowl, wind blew away the top layer of soil where crops grow.
Biosphere All living things on Earth. People, animals, and plants were affected by the Dust Bowl.
Aquifer An underground layer of rock or sand that stores water. People can use wells to get this water.
Model A drawing, object, or other simple way to show how something works. A model can help us explain how dry soil, wind, and plants affected one another during the Dust Bowl.
