Bio Lab Diffusion

QuestionAnswer
Solute Substance that is dissolving Example: Iced Tea Mix
Solvent Liquid the solute dissolves in Example: Water
Solution Solute dissolved in solvent Example: Iced Tea
Semipermeable Membrane A layer that only certain molecules can pass through; they must be small enough
Diffusion The movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area o flower concentration until equilibrium is reached
Osmosis Simple diffusion of water; water molecules move though the semipermeable membrane but NOT solute molecules (sugar, salt, etc.)
Hypertonic More solute outside of cell than inside of cell
Hypotonic More solute inside cell than outside cell
Isotonic Equal amount of water, inside and outside of cell; no net movement
Hypertonic-Animal cell Water rushed out of cell and shrinks it-CRENATION; does not like this solution
Hypertonic-Plant Cell Water rushes out of cell and shrinks it/damages cell wall-PLASMOLYSIS; does not like this solution
Isotonic-Animal Cell Prefers this solution
Isotonic-Plant Cell Does not like this solution, since it wants to hold water; condition is Flaccid
Hypotonic-Animal Cell Cell expands and bursts called LYSIS, does not like this solution
Hypotonic-Plant Cell Prefers this solution, Turgid (normal condition)
Where would water go (into the cell or into the beaker)? (with sucrose solution/distilled water) beaker picture Water will go into the cell since the distilled water has a higher concentration of water than the sucrose solution
What would happen to the size (or weight) of the cell over time? beaker picture The cell would increase in size and weight because water enters through osmosis
If this was an animal cell, what word would describe this situation? beaker picture Lysis, because an animal cell can swell and burst when too much water is inside of it
What about a plant cell? beaker picture The plant cell would become turgid. It swells when water enters, but the cell wall prevents it from bursting
What (4) factors affect the rate of diffusion? 1. Concentration 2. Temperature 3. Size 4. Time

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
