Unit 2: Electrons

QuestionAnswer
What’s the idea of the model of the atom? Energy is thought to exist in small invisible pockets called quanta and this theory was used to develop a model of the atom which had a central nucleus surrounded by shells of electrons (energy levels)
Reasoning for the atom Diffrent properties must come from the diffrent shapes kf the material at their basic building block level
Valence electrons Electrons that are located on the outermost shell and are responsible for properties, bonding, and chemical reactions
Core electrons All kf the other electrons in an atom beside the valence electrons, responsible for shielding
Octet rule The tendency of atoms to prefer to have eight electrons in the valence shell
Lewis diagram Short hand version to show the valence electron for main group elements (1A-8A)
Who discovered the first atom Democritus, said they were unchangeable, indestructible, and always existed
Who was Dalton? Created the first model of the atom becahse he believed all matter was made out of tiny solid atoms. Solid sphere model, loved metoralagy and teaching
Who is Tomson? Created the 2nd atom model: plum pudding, because he discovered electrons and the model showed that atoms also contained negatively charged particles. He won a Nobel prize
Who is Rutherford Created the 3rd model of the atom which showed that atoms have a nucleus that’s positively charged but the rest is empty space. He was the first to split the atom
Who was Bohr! He was the 4th to make an atom model, he wanted to explain that electrons move around the nucleus specific energy levels. Liked soccer
Who was Schrödinger/ heinsburg Was the 5th person to create the model of the atom. They developed the electron cloud model because electrons behave like waves and their exact location cannot be known precisely. They both hated eachother.
Who was Chadwick? Was the 6th person to create the atom model. He discovered neutrons because of their weight. He updated the model to show that the nucleus contains both protons and neutrons. He wanted to go into math but accidentally went into science.
Red waves Low energy and frequency, long frequency
Violet waves High energy and frequency, short wavelengths
How to find valence electrons 1A-8A/ main group elements
How to find number of energy levels Period #

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
