Physics Unit 1

1.4: Energy concepts

QuestionAnswer
What is work a transfer of? Energy
'Work is equal to the energy that is transferred as a result of the f____ and is a product of the m_____ of the force and the d_____ moved in the direction of the force'. . Force . Magnitude . Direction
What's the equation for Work? Work = Force x distance
'When a force acts upon a body, work has been done to move it', However this only applies if..? . The force is constant (or the average force is known) . The force and the displacement are in the same direction
Work at an angle is calculated with what equation? Fxcos 0(theta)
What is the equation for KE ? 1/2 MV^2
What's the equation for PE ? MGH M= the mass of the body G= acceleration due to gravity = 9.81ms^2 H = is the change in the height in Metres
'Work is done against g____ to move the object vertically against it's own w____' . Gravity . Weight
What does Hooke's law show us? The extension of a spring will be proportional to the force applied to it.
What's the equation for Hooke's law? F = KX K= spring constant X= extension
' If a graph is plotted of the applied force against distance, then the a___ under the graph is equal to the w___ d____ by the force on the object . area . work done
What is the law of conservation of energy? Energy cannot be created, or destroyed, only transferred from one form to another
True or false: The total energy of system stays constant even if their is a change in the type of energy. True
' The increase in KE is equal to w___ d____' . Work done
Finish the equation: FX = ________ FX = 1/2MV^2 - 1/2MU^2
What is Power defined as? The rate of doing work or the rate of transferring energy
What are the 4 equations related to Power? . P=W/T . P=E/T . P= FX/T . P= FV
What situation does the equation P=FV apply to? A situation where an object has a force exerted on it that is trying to accelerate it, but is being balanced by another force.
What is a dissipative force? A force that decreases the mechanical energy of a system such as kinetic energy by converting it into non-mechanical forms such as thermal energy.
What is efficiency? Measure of the percentage (or fraction) of the input energy which is used to do work.
What is the equation for efficiency? Useful energy output / energy input X 100% OR... Useful Power output / power input X 100%
What is the definition for input energy with efficiency? Total energy supplied to the system
What is the definition for output energy with efficiency? Total energy that comes out the system

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
