What are the CNS stimulants? Amphetamine/Dextroamphetamine/Methylphenidate
What is the therapeutic purpose of cns stimulants? Improve attention, focus, and concentration, decrease impulsivity and hyperactivity, and improve academic, occupational, and social fonctioning.
What is the mechanism of action of CNS stimulants? Increase norepinephrine and dopamine in the CNS
Adverse effects of CNS stimulants Insomnia, weight loss, increeased HR/BP, headache, anxiety, irritability
What is the black box warning? can cause MI, sudden death, report MI symptoms.
When should you take these CNS stim medications? In the morning to avoid insomnia.
Considerations for medication Avoid OTC cold meds due to additive stimulant effects, no refills new prescription required.
