| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is the size principle? | Motor units are recruited from smallest to largest and from slow to fast: Type l -> Type lla -> Type llx, depending on force needed. |
| What is the force-velocity relationship? | Force and velocity have an inverse relationship: high force associated with lower velocity, while lower force allows greater velocity. |
| What is the force-power relationship? | Power = force × velocity. The relationship is an inverted U, with maximum power at an intermediate combination of force and velocity. |
| What is muscle fatigue? | A decline in muscle power output; it is not the same as muscle damage. |
| What is DOMS? | Delayed onset muscle soreness appears 24–48 hours after unaccustomed or strenuous exercise and is associated with microscopic tears and inflammatory responses. It is not due to lactic acid. |
| What is hypertrophy? | Growth in muscle size through increases in the size of existing muscle fibers, associated with increases in myofibrillar protein concentrations. |
| What is atrophy? | Loss of muscle mass when muscle protein breakdown exceeds muscle protein synthesis. |
| What is sarcopenia? | Age-related muscle atrophy. |
