Stages of Sleep
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| NREM 1 | Light sleep and easily awoken with hallucinations and hypnagogic sensations where person experiences senses or jerking along with feeling like they're falling. Alpha Waves. |
| NREM 2 | Fully asleep with sleep spindles(random burst of short activity) and k-complexes(random tall bursts of activity). Can still be easily awoken, but is asleep. Theta Waves. |
| NREM 3 | Deep Sleep and is when the pituitary gland releases a growth hormone. Hard to awaken, but still processes stimuli(doesn't fall off the bed and selective attention). Can sleep walk and sleep talk during this phase. Delta Waves. |
| REM | Brain is active as if it was awake despite the body being paralyzed. Dreams occur. Beta Waves. |
| REM Rebound | If deprived of REM sleep, the person will go through longer REM sleep the next time they fall asleep. |
| Beta Waves | Looks like a serrated edge of a knife, 13-30 Hz and occurs while awake. |
| Alpha Waves | Moderately consistent waves that are pretty tall. Occurs while sleepy or relaxed and is 8-13 Hz |
| Theta Waves | Has sleep spindles with short bursts of activity(packed together) and k complexes with tall bursts of activity(spread further apart). Happens during stage 1 and 2 of light sleep with 4-8 Hz |
| Delta Waves | Not a whole lot of activity in general. During deep sleep and has Hz of 1-4 |
