cells

TermDefinition
cell the smallest, basic unit of life that makes up all living organisms
Osmosis the movement of water (or another solvent) through a special barrier
Cell Theory a core scientific rule in biology that states all living things are made of cells,
cell wall a rigid, protective outer layer that surrounds the cell membrane of plant, fungal, algal, and bacterial cells
cell membrane a thin, protective layer that surrounds every living cell
nucleus a central part or control center found in different fields
Organelle a tiny, specialized structure inside a cell that performs a specific job
Ribosome a tiny structure inside a cell that makes proteins
Nucleic Acid large, natural molecules that store and share genetic information in living things
Selectively Permeable a barrier—such as a cell membrane—that allows only certain molecules or ions to pass through while blocking others
Cytoplasm the thick, jelly-like fluid and all the material inside a cell
Mitochondria membrane-bound cell organelles that generate most of the chemical energy needed to power a cell's biochemical reactions
Endoplasmic Reticulum membranes, sacs, and tubes inside plant and animal cells that helps make, process, and transport proteins and fats
Golgi Apparatus a cell organelle that modifies, sorts, and packages proteins and lipids to send them to their next destinations
Chloroplast a double-membraned organelle in plant and algal cells that converts sunlight into chemical energy through photosynthesis
Lysosome a membrane-bound cell organelle that contains digestive enzymes to break down waste, old cell parts, and foreign invaders
DNA instruction manual or blueprint inside your cells that tells your body how to grow, look, and work
Passive Transport the movement of molecules or ions across a cell membrane from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration without using cell energy
Active Transport the movement of molecules or ions across a cell membrane from an area of lower concentration to an area of higher concentration
Diffusion the natural process where particles spread out from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
Tissue a group of similar cells working together to perform a specific job in a living organism
Organ a self-contained part of a living body made of different types of tissues working together to do a specific job
Organ System a group of different organs that work together to perform a major job or function in the body
Endocytosis an active cellular process where a cell brings large substances, liquids, or nutrients into itself by engulfing them with its cell membrane.
Exocytosis an active transport process where a cell moves materials from its interior to the outside by enclosing them in a membrane-bound sac that fuses with the cell's outer plasma membrane.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
