QuestionAnswer
Identify the Problem *Base your experiment on an idea or observation *State your purpose in the form of a research question. Example:How does the independent variable affect the dependent variable
Gather Information *Do your research *What do you know about the investigation? *What is already known to researchers about the investigation?
State your Hypothesis * An educated guess about how changing the independent variable will affect the results *Choose 1 independent Variable and predict what you think it will do. * A Hypothesis can be written as an IF, THEN statement
Design and Perform an Experiment *Variables Independent Variable - Variable you can change on purpose (manipulated variable, or cause) Dependent Variable, - Variable that responds to a change (responding variable)
Constants Characteristics in an experiment that are kept unchanged in all trials
Control Standard for comparison
Trials The number of times an experiment is repeated. The more trials the more reliable your results
Observations Qualitative - Data can be observed but not measured. Collected with your five senses. Qualitative = Quality. Quantitative - Data that can be observed by measuring. (metric system) Quantitative = Quantity.
Record Observations Record observations (Data) in the form of a chart Data Table. Title- Give the Data table a title that includes your variables
Set Up Label the column to LEFT with independent variable Label the column to the RIGHT with dependent variable and unit * If there are more trials, include the average
Analyze the Data Find the meaning Inferences - An explanation of an observation based on prior knowledge or experiences
Construct a Graph Bar, Line, Pie Graph Add title that includes both variables X-axis : Label the independent variable and unit Y-axis : Label the dependent variable and unit * Only graph the points for data that you collected
Conclusion * Can you SUPPORT your Hypothesis * Provide evidence using qualitative and quantitative data
Publish results Communicate your findings in a report or demonstration

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
