| Term | Definition |

| force | a push or pull |
| normal force | an applied force that is perpendicular to the object |
| contact force | a force exerted when objects are touching each other |
| non-contact force | a force exerted at a distance |
| friction | a contact force that two surfaces exert on each other when they push or rub against each other |
| gravity | a non-contact force that pulls objects with mass toward each other |
| magnetism | the attractive or repulsive force exerted by magnetic materials-non contact force |
| magnitude | strength or degree |
| balanced forces | two forces acting on the same object that are equal in strength and opposite in direction |
| unbalanced forces | two forces acting on the same object that are not equal in strength and opposite in direction |
| net force | the combination of all the forces acting on an object |
| Newton’s third law of motion | a law that states if one object exerts a force on another object, then the second object exerts an equal but opposite force on the first object |
| force pairs | an action force and its corresponding reaction force, as described by Newton’s third law |
