Chapter 7 RMpt2

QuestionAnswer
Internal Validity Observed differences on the DV are directly related to the IV and not due to some other unintended variable
External Validity defree to which the conclusions in your study would hold for other persons, other places, measures conditions and times
Represnetative Sample sample closely matches the population
Biased Sample a sample that differs from the population
Nonrespondent Bias Those who will respond in a survey that differs in significant ways from those who do not
Sampling bias/ selection bias sampling procedure favors the selection of some individual over others
Target population Entire collection of people of things you are interested in- ex- people living in ROC
Accessible Population the specific data from which the sample is drawn- Ex- phone book
Sample Subset of some of the units of the population Ex-400 people
Probability sampling Simple Random, Systematic, Stratified
Non-probability sampling convenince, quota
Simple Random Sampling Every member has an equal probability of being sampled, less likely to be biased- dis- need to know the entire population to select from it
Systematic Sampling Selecting the nth partcipant from the population list- adv- saves time and energy, dis- not entirely bias free; each item doesnt have equal chance to being selected
Stratified Random Sampling the population is divided into subgroups (strata)and random sampling techniques are then used to select sample member from each subgroup- divide population into various strata. Randomly simple within each strata
Proportionate Stratified Random Sample sample from each strata should be proportional to the population
Convenience Sample no random select individuals who are easy to get- Ex- volunteers
Quota Sample set using some characteristics of the population thought to be relevant selected, non-randomly - Adv- may allow representative sample, Dis- selection bias
Sample Size critical factor is wheather sample is representative, necesary sample size depends on population size
Reporting Partcipants in APA papers state how partcipants were selected, describe how they were selected, identifying procedures taken to protect the partcipants

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
