AP Lang Diction Voc.

TermDefinition
High/Formal Diction usually contains language that creates an elevated tone. Free of slang
Neutral Diction uses standard language and vocabulary without elaborate words and may include contractions
Informal/ Low Diction Language of everyday use
Slang refers to recently coined words often used in informal situations
Colloquial expressions that are nonstandard, often regional, ways of using language appropriate to informal or conversational speech and writing.
Jargon consists of words and expressions characteristic of a particular trade, profession, or pursuit
Dialect nonstandard subgroup of a language with its won vocabulary and grammatical features.
Concrete diction consists of specific words that describe physical qualities or conditions.
Abstract diction refers to language that denotes ideas, emotions, conditions, or concepts that are intangible.
Denotation the exact, literal definition of a word
Connotation implicit rather than explicit definition of a word that has emotional overtones.
Line of Reasoning the logical sequence of connected ideas, claims, and evidence that leads an audience from a central thesis to a final conclusion
Imagery the use of language to evoke a picture or a concrete sensation of a person, a thing, a place, or an experience
Diction the words the writer chooses to convey a particular meaning
Visual imagery dealing with sight, seeing
Tactile imagery dealing with touch, warmth/cold, texture of feeling
Gustatory imagery dealing with taste, ingestion, eating, drinking
Anditory imagery dealing with hearing, sounds, noises, listening
Olfactory imagery dealing with smelling, our nose
