QuestionAnswer
Client-server vs. peer-to-peer networks? Client-server uses a central server; P2P devices share directly.
What is an intermediary device? A device that connects devices and directs or controls network data.
Examples of intermediary devices? Routers; switches; access points; firewalls; and bridges.
What is a PAN? Personal Area Network; connects devices within a very small area.
What is a LAN? Local Area Network; covers a home; office; school; or building.
What is a MAN? Metropolitan Area Network; covers a city or metropolitan area.
What is a WAN? Wide Area Network; connects networks across large geographic areas.
What is an intranet? A private network used within an organization.
What are the 3 types of transmission media? Copper cable; fiber-optic cable; and wireless.
What is unicast? Data sent from one device to one specific device.
What is multicast? Data sent from one device to a specific group of devices.
What is broadcast? Data sent from one device to all devices on the local network.
What are benefits of cloud computing? Remote access; lower costs; backups; scalability; and collaboration.
What is physical network security? Protecting network equipment from access; theft; damage; or tampering.
What are the 4 properties of a reliable network? Fault tolerance; scalability; QoS; and security.
What protocol suite does the Internet use? TCP/IP.
OSI Layer 7? Application - Data.
OSI Layer 6? Presentation - Data.
OSI Layer 5? Session - Data.
OSI Layer 4? Transport - Segment.
OSI Layer 3? Network - Packet.
OSI Layer 2? Data Link - Frame.
OSI Layer 1? Physical - Bits.
What is data encapsulation? Adding protocol information to data as it moves through network layers.
MAC address vs. IP address? MAC identifies a local interface; IP identifies and routes between networks.
What OSI layers use MAC and IP addresses? MAC: Layer 2; IP: Layer 3.
What is bandwidth? The maximum amount of data a connection can carry in a given time.
What is throughput? The actual amount of data successfully transmitted in a given time.
CAT 5 speed? 100 Mbps.
CAT 5e speed? 1 Gbps.
CAT 6 speed? 1 Gbps; up to 10 Gbps over shorter distances.
CAT 6a speed? 10 Gbps.
CAT 7 speed? 10 Gbps.
CAT 8 speed? 25-40 Gbps.
What cable uses an RJ-45 connector? Twisted-pair Ethernet cable such as UTP or STP.
Most common twisted-pair termination standard? T568B.
What is electromagnetic interference (EMI)? Unwanted electromagnetic energy that interferes with data transmission.
What is crosstalk? A signal in one wire or pair interfering with a nearby wire or pair.
What signal does fiber-optic cable use? Light signals.
What is an advantage of digital signals over analog signals? Digital signals are less affected by noise and can be transmitted more reliably.
What is UTP cable? Unshielded copper twisted-pair cable; inexpensive but more affected by EMI.
What is STP cable? Shielded copper twisted-pair cable with better EMI protection.
What is fiber-optic cable? Cable that carries data as light; fast; long-range; and immune to EMI.
What do UTP; STP; and fiber have in common? All are transmission media used to carry network data.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
