A&P ch 3/4 vocab

tissues, membranes, and the integumentary system

QuestionAnswer
adipose a specialized connective tissue composed mostly of fat beneath the skin insulates and protects the body
areolar tissue most widely distributed connective tissue, functions as packing tissue and can soak up extra fluid(edema)
bone osseous tissue, protects and supports organs and creates central canals for nerves and blood vessels
connective tissue most abundant tissue, connects, protects, supports, and insulates other body tissues
dense connective tissue made up of mainly collagen fibres and fibroblasts forms tendons and ligaments
desiccation drying out of body tissues especially between vertebrae
elastic cartilage elastic moveable cartilage found in structures such as ear lobe, and nose
endocrine glands ductless glands that diffuse into blood vessels
exocrine glands contain ducts through which secretions empty to an epithelial surface ex:sweat, oil, digestive glands
epithelial tissue lining, covering, and glandular tissue of the body covers all free body surfaces functions to absorb, secrete, filter, and lightly protect
extracellular matrix non-living materials surrounding living cells that keep most from being packed tightly together
fibrocartilage fibrous cartilage highly compressible between vertebrae
hyaline cartilage has abundant collagen fibers hidden by rubbery matrix with a glassy appearance Ex:cartilage between ribs
glands any organs that create fluid to be distributed throughout the body
muscle tissue skeletal, cardiac, and smooth specialized to contract or shorten to produce movement
nervous tissue neuron cells with functions of irritability and conductivity
pseudostratified columnar epithelium single layer of columnar epithelium with varying heights making it appear stratified
reticular connective tissue delicate network of interwoven reticular fibres forming the stroma of inner organs
secretion release of a substance
hormone chemical messengers produced by specialized endocrine glands or organs that travel through the bloodstream to bind with specific cellular receptors and regulate bodily functions
simple columnar epithelium one layer of tall cells fit close together often containing goblet cells producing mucus lines the digestive tract
simple cuboidal epithelium one layer of cuboidal cells resting on a basement membrane common in glands and ducts, salivary glands, pancreas, and kidney tubules
simple squamous epithelium one layer of thin squamous cells resting on a basement membrane forms membranes for filtration and diffusion, air sacs of lungs, capillary walls, and serous membranes
Stratified squamous epithelium most common stratified epithelium, consists of many layers, cells at free edge are squamous cells close to basement cuboidal or columnar found in surface of skin, mouth, and esophagus
stratified cuboidal epithelium just 2 layers of cells with at least surface being cuboidal
stratified columnar epithelium only 2 layers columnar cells on surface, basal cells vary in size and shape found mainly in ducts of large glands
Transitional epithelium modified stratified squamous the lines the urinary system allowing stretch, basal cells are cuboidal or columnar and surface vary cells flatten when stretched by fluid
chondrocytes cartilage cells
lacunae a small, microscopic cavity, pit, or empty space within biological and anatomical tissues that houses and protects resident cells
osteocytes bone cells
collagen the most abundant protein in your body, acting like the natural "glue" or scaffolding that holds your body together, white, forms ligaments and tendons
Elastin/ic fibres yellow , a key fibrous protein in the extracellular matrix that gives connective tissues the ability to stretch and snap back to their original shape, ex:ears, nostrils
Reticular fibres mesh for inside structure of some soft organs ex:spleen
adipocytes fat cells
blood plasma non living fluid matrix surrounding blood cells making it a connective tissue
interceltaed discs found in cardiac muscle tissue;junctions that allow ions to pass freely from cell to cell
striations a long, thin line, groove, scratch, or strip of color that is usually part of a parallel series on a surface;found in skeletal and cardiac muscle tissue
regeneration damaged tissue fixed by the same cells maintaining the anatomy and physiology
fibrosis tissue repair by dense connective tissue;does not maintain anatomy or physiology;scar tissue

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
