Homeostasis

Year 9 Science

QuestionAnswer
Homeostasis Homeostasis is the process of keeping the body's internal conditions stable, even when the outside environment changes.
Eye receptor Photoreceptors (detect light)
Ear receptor Mechanoreceptors (detect sound vibrations)
Nose and Tongue receptor Chemoreceptors ( chemicals in air and food)
Skin/ Touch receptor Thermoreceptor and Pain receptor
The stimulus response model in order stimulus - receptor - control centre - effector - response
1. Stimulus A change in the environment
2. Receptor Detects the change
3. Coordinator / control centre Processes information, e.g. the brain or spinal cord
4. Effector A muscle or gland carries out the response
5. Response The body's reaction
How do feedback loops maintain blood glucose and body temperature? Negative feedback loops maintain homeostasis by reversing changes and returning the body to normal. Blood glucose: Insulin lowers glucose; glucagon raises it. Temperature: Sweating cools; shivering warms.
What are the 3 types of neurons ? Sensory (senses information, interneuron (in between) and motor (makes muscles respond)
Sensory neurons Take sensory information from the environment (ie. getting poked with a needle) and send signals to the brain
Motor neurons Communicate information from the brain to tissues and organs throughout the body, allowing for movement
Interneuron
Reflex action a rapid, automatic response that usually happens without conscious thought. It helps protect the body. (ie. Pulling your hand away from a hot surface )
Conscious response a voluntary action that involves awareness and processing by the brain. (ie. seeing a ball coming towards you and choosing to catch it
Endocrine glands and the hormones they produce The endocrine system is a group of glands that release hormones into the bloodstream. Hormones are chemical messengers that regulate body functions.
What are hormones? a chemical messenger released by an endocrine gland into the bloodstream.
What is a target cell? A cell that has the correct receptor for a particular hormone.
The fight-or-flight response The fight-or-flight response is the body's automatic reaction to a threat or stressful situation. The adrenal glands release adrenaline, which prepares the body for action.
