QuestionAnswer
What is a compound It is 2 or more elements that are chemically combined
What is a mixture 2 or more substances that are not chemically combined. You can easily separate them
What is a solution When the solvent and solute are mixed together
What is an atom and what are the parts of it An atom is a tiny particle that is made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons
What is a metal A material that is typically hard, shiny, and is a good conductor of heat and electricity
What is a metalliod. A chemical element with properties “in between” or that are a mixture of, metals and non-metals. Staircase in a periodic table.
What are the physical properties Observed/measured. Examples: color, odor, phase, shape. Heat and electrical conductivity, boiling, freezing points, texture, density volley ball vs boiling ball and the 5 senses sight, hearing, taste, touch, smell
What is mass How much stuff is inside an object. It stays the same everywhere.
What are the chemical properties How a substance changes into a new substance Examples:flammability; ability to burn, reactivity;ability to combine, and rusting;(iron+water=iron oxide)
What is a physical change It keeps chemical composition and properties and does not produce a new substance. Examples: tearing, crushing, cutting, phase changes
What is a chemical change Chemical reaction and it forms new substances with different properties and indication. Examples: change in color, bubbling, light production, smoke, presence of heat
What is a solid A substance with a definite shape and volume
What is a liquid A substance that has a definite volume but not a definite shape
What is a gas A substance that has neither a definite volume nor shape
What is freezing A change in state that occurs when the temperature of particles has decreased energy and a liquid turns into a solid
What is melting A change in state that occurs when particles speed up and change from a solid to a liquid
What is boiling A rapid change in state that occurs throughout a substance changing it from from a liquid to a gas
What is evaporation A change in state that occurs as particles from the surface of a liquid to a gas
What is sublimation A change in state directly from a solid to a gas
What is condensation The reverse of evaporation when a substance changes from a gas to a liquid state
What is deposition The change in state directly from a gas to a liquid state
What is a boiling point The specific temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas
What is a melting point The specific temperature at which a solid changes to a liquid
What is a solute A substance that is dissolved
What is a solvent A substance that does the dissolving
