Velocity-Time

QuestionAnswer
What is velocity? Speed with direction.
What is acceleration? A change in velocity over time.
What is constant velocity? The same speed in the same direction.
What is the main difference between speed and velocity? Velocity includes direction; speed does not.
What does a negative velocity tell you? The object is moving in the negative direction, not automatically slowing down.
What are three ways velocity can change? An object can speed up, slow down, or change direction.
What is the acceleration of an object moving at constant velocity? Zero acceleration.
What does a horizontal line above zero on a velocity-time graph show? Constant positive velocity and zero acceleration.
What does a horizontal line below zero on a velocity-time graph show? Constant negative velocity and zero acceleration.
What does a horizontal line at zero on a velocity-time graph show? The object is stopped.
What does the slope of a velocity-time graph tell you? How velocity is changing, or acceleration.
What does an upward slope on a velocity-time graph represent? Positive acceleration.
What does a downward slope on a velocity-time graph represent? Negative acceleration.
Does a downward-sloping velocity-time graph always mean slowing down? No. You must consider the sign and magnitude of velocity.
What happens when velocity changes from positive to negative? The object changes direction.
What happens when velocity changes from negative to positive? The object changes direction.
An object has velocities of +6 m/s and -6 m/s. How do their speeds compare? The speeds are equal; only the directions are different.
A velocity-time graph rises, becomes horizontal, then falls while staying above zero. Describe the motion. The object speeds up, moves at constant velocity, then slows while continuing forward.
Car A travels 24 m in 4 s. Car B travels 35 m in 5 s. Which car is faster? Car B. Car A moves 6 m/s and Car B moves 7 m/s.
What is the best routine for solving a motion-graph question? Read the axes, find zero, check the slope, describe the motion, and use evidence.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
